BTEC ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

What is the BTEC Advanced Diploma in Information Technology?

It is a student centred activity based course designed to offer you a choice of routes both in higher education and into employment.

This qualification helps you to go onto higher level qualifications, such as Higher National Diploma in Business Information Technology or Software Engineering conducted at Soft-Tech Training Centre or for first year BSc at a reputable University in UK.

What is BTEC?

BTEC is the Business and Technology Education Council that awards internationally recognised qualifications to individuals who successfully complete BTEC programs at approved centres.

Soft-Tech Taining Centre is approved by the BTEC to deliver professional courses in Information Technology in consultation with the Wigan and Leigh College in UK.

Wigan and Leigh College is one of the largest education institutions in UK. affiliated with Soft-Tech for delivery of BTEC Courses in Dar es Salaam.

Through these affiliations, Soft-Tech Training Centre asssist in University placement at Universities such as University of Manchester, Liverpool University, University of Central Lancashire, Salford Univeristy and other leading Universities.

Who is it for?

You need to be at least 16 with successful completion of Form IV and a keen desire to pursue a career in Information Technology.

What is the educational recognition of this course?

The Advanced Diploma is comparable to A Levels and satisfy the general entrance requirement to a BTEC Higher National Diploma or to first year University abroad.

Professional bodies such as British Computer Society (BCS) and institute of Data Processing Management (IDPM) recognise BTEC courses and give either membership status or exemption from their examinations to holders of BTEC qualifications.

Examples of employers who value BTEC qualifications are: British Gas, BMW, Barclays Bank, DHL, Heathrow Airport, Shell International, British Airways, IBM.

What will I study?

You will study 8 Mandatory Units and 4 Optional Units, and you will develop core skills,

The Mandatory Units are:

UNIT 1 : Information Technology Systems
1.1    Investigate Industrial and Commercial IT System
1.2    Invetigate components of an IT system
1.3    Investigate the operation of a microprocessor system
1.4    Install and configure a stand-alone computer

UNIT 2 : Using Information Technology
2.1    Process commercial documents
2.2    Process presentational and technical graphic design
2.3    Model data
2.4    Develop a control system

UNIT 3 : Organisations and IT
3.1    Investigate the flow of information on organisations
3.2    Investigate data handling systems
3.3    Use IT for a data handling activity
3.4    Investigate the safety and security requirements for a data handling activity

UNIT 4 : Communications and Networking
4.1    Investigate electronic communications
4.2    Use electronic communcations to transfer data
4.3    Investigate computer networks
4.4    Use a computer network

UNIT 5 : Systems Analysis
5.1    Investigate principles of system analysis and specification
5.2    Undertake systems analysis
5.3    Produce a system specification

UNIT 6 : Software
6.1    Investigate software
6.2    Examine software production
6.3    Investigate the production of automated procedures

UNIT 7 : Database development
7.1    Create relational database structures for a given specification
7.2    Create data input forms for a database
7.3    Create database reports

UNIT 8 : IT Projects and Teamwork
8.1    Explore IT team projects
8.2    Contribute to an IT team project
8.3    Evaluate an IT team project

The program also develops core skills in:

- Communication : Which covers presenting information and ideas through the process of speaking, listening, writing and reading.
- Application of Number : Which includes gathering and processing data, representing and tackling problems and interpreting and presenting data in a practical context.

UNIT 9 : Procedural Program
9.1    Investigate Program Design
9.2    Design a program to a given program specification
9.3    Test the program design

UNIT 10 : Procedural Program Production
10.1    Investigate high level structured procedural programming languages
10.2    Produce a program to a given program design
10.3    Test the coded program

UNIT 11 : Using Application Software
11.1    Explore possible application package solutions to a defined problem
11.2    Design an application software solution
11.3    Implement solution
11.4    Test the solution

UNIT 12 : Computational Methods
12.1    Investigate the mathematical and algebraic skills required in IT
12.2    Investigate the graphical techniques required in IT
12.3    Investigate statistical techniques used in IT
12.4    Investigate sets and logic used in IT

Assessment and Grading

The programme is assessed by a range of methods which may include projects, assignmentsm, case studies and coursework. There will also be external written tests for each mandatory unit. You will have a portfolio of evidence to keep your work in.

Award of Diploma

Successful completion of all the modules will be recognised by the award of BTEC Advanced Diploma, together with notification of performance for all units completed.

Course Duration

BTEC Advanced Diploma will normally take one year of full time study. There is a two weeks winter break and one week Christmas break. Students are also given time for preparation of examination. The total study duration is about 44-45 weeks.

Course Timings

Classes are conducted from Monday to Friday, from 9:00AM to 2:00PM with two 15 minutes break. On Saturdays the centre is open for practice but no lectures will be scheduled unless required towards the end of the course.

The Cost

Soft-Tech course fees : Tshs 1,500,000.00
Payable in three installments:
Installment 1 : At the time of registration (January or July)
Installment 2 : March / September
Installment 3 : June / November

Local fees cover the following:

- Tuition costs
- Practical training on computers - Regular hours
- Practice on computer systems - Saturdays and other free time
- Course notes (to cover areas not defined in text books)
- Stationery
- Light refreshments during breaks on regular course days
